The graduates in their graduation gowns march towards the altar with the altar servers, the guest speaker and the priest. The Celebrant, after ascending to the altar reverently puts incense in the midst and at the other side of the altar table.
The purpose of incensing and the symbolic value of the smoke is that of purification and sanctification, creating an ambiance of heaven.
The use of the incense adds a sense of solemnity to the Mass. The visual imagery and the smell transcend our senses linking heaven and earth. From here, we we allow the presence of God in our midst.
The Celebrant asks us to join in making the Sign of the Cross and invites the faithful to take part in the penitential rite consisting of the "Confiteor". It is then followed by the Kyrie Eleison . The Gloria, an ancient hymn is sung in special solemn occasion in which the Church, praises the Father and the Lamb.
The Liturgy of the Word begins with the Readings from Scripture. After the First Reading comes the Responsorial Psalm .
The Celebrant reads the Gospel and explains the readings in the Homily.
In the preparation of the gifts, the bread and wine are brought to the altar, the same element that Christ used in the Last Supper. In the altar, the center of the Liturgy of the Eucharist, the corporal, purificator, missal and chalice are place on it.
The gifts on the altar and the altar are incensed. This is symbol of the Church's offering and prayer going up to God.
Now, the center of the entire celebration begins with the Eucharistic prayer. The priest invites the people to lift up their hearts to the Lord in thanksgiving and praise.
The Congregation sings the "Sanctus" joining the angels. The Church, in a special invocation, calls on God's power and asks the gifts to be consecrated to become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Using the words which Christ himself said at the Last Supper, the bread and wine are offered as Jesus' body and blood which He gave for the apostles to eat and drink and commanded them to carry on this mystery.
The Church keeps the memorial of Jesus by recalling His Passion, Resurrection and Ascension.
The Communion Rite follows with the Lord's Prayer, the Rite of Peace, and the Breaking of the Bread. Agnus Dei is sung.
The priest and the faithful receive the Lord's body from hosts consecrated in the Holy Mass.
The Graduation Ceremony begins with the procession to the altar by the graduates, the priests and the guest speaker.
