Can Classic Novels Substitute for a Reading, Grammar, Vocabulary, Spelling Program?

I bet.

But, our family has tried it. We have no other curriculum for Reading other than reading the classic novels available. In this method, our children achieves the objectives of spelling, vocabulary, grammar and reading curriculum.

For example, in grammar, we go from whole to parts, instead of parts to whole. In other words, instead of studying the parts of speech then going to sentence structure and conjugation, to paragraphs and stories, by reading classic novels we move from the timeless novel and just worry about grammar if there is an obvious deficiency in the area. In most cases, just be reading these classic novels, everything resolves on its own.

Child Reading

As soon as you can, you must read aloud to your child to perk his interest in books. Many parents swear on putting labels around the house to name objects at the vision level of the preschooler.

Phonics lessons can be started as early as 2 years old by getting hold of alphabet books. However, instead of focusing on the letter names, introduce the alphabet with their sounds.

Offer your preschooler the children classics and then after primary grades, begin the reading of the Great books. You must focus on literature in the late 18th century to 19th century. This period is the height of many great authors in existence.

In order for your child to be ready for the 4th grade reading, the best academic preparation you can provide your child are numerous read aloud opportunities and lots of play.

My 4 year old taught himself the letter sounds by watching some preschool online games. He was only 2 years old.

Self-Study for Elementary and High School

When your child reaches the age of 7 or 8 years old, he or she can start on a full-fledged self-study reading program. The most organized self-study homeschool curriculum that I have found in the market is called the Robinson Curriculum.
