Study at Home Religion
The Fourth (R)
When I talk about Religion, I want you to focus on the "science of God". You or your children might say " I do not have any use for that stuff." I heard that from my children in the early part of our home study experience. It felt like they had a valid point. They did not study Religion anyway in public school. There isn't any discerning difference or impact. The 3 core subjects of Math, Reading and Writing already require too much time. Perhaps, a day per week is enough. This is a great misconception in learning. Religion is important. WHY THE STUDY OF RELIGION IS IMPORTANT? God and His Creation are a mystery. To study these mysteries brings us to another level of learning. You may believe and experience God in your daily life. But, you would not really know God deeper, if you do not study Religion. C.S. Lewis explicitly writes an analogy about this in the 23rd chapter of his book "Mere Christianity". C.S Lewis talked about knowing the Atlantic Ocean by either viewing it from the beach or by reading a map. The first is a real first hand experience, but the second is less real but still the truth. You cannot discount the fact, that in the making of the map, it involved a plethora of experiences from those who sailed the Atlantic Ocean before us. That is why the map is also accurate and real. When you use the map, you get guided and directed to the truth. You can even see the Atlantic Ocean in totality and not just a glimpse as you would experience if you were in the beach walking in the sands. C.S. Lewis relates the map with the study of God. Church doctrines are not God but a guide in knowing God. Even if you know there is a God and experience Him in your spiritual life, if you do not know Him, you cannot understand the mystery of His creation. Then, how can you get to Him? Even if you do not study Religion, you may have some knowledge of God. However, what you know may not be accurate. Public school sulks. They do not allow God in this institution. This is the major reason why we decided to study at home. Why let my children interact in an institution which does not acknowledge the TRUTH?
