Nov 17, Joseph Claims College Credits in High School Help in College Registration

My 18 yo son Joseph, who is on his freshman year at a Jesuit university in California, called me up one day. He said that if it was not for his college credits he acquired while in high school, it would be too difficult to enroll for his courses next semester.

You see, Joseph graduated with 24 college credits under his belt in high school, thus, his university put him in a different level for enrollment. He said, that upperclass students have priority in selecting their subjects for the next semester. Perhaps, the reasoning for this is that they need these courses to graduate and hence, they must be given priority in registration.

So, since Joseph has all those college credits, he gets to classified as a sophomore and junior.

Sep 21, Why many do not "get" the "teach yourself" method?

The "teach yourself" philosophy seems to be heartless for many parents. This holds true if the educational philosophy you received involved professor-led lectures.

Once a student learns primarily with the "teach yourself" method, a confidence emerges that makes this student invincible. Everything in the student's life is doable, or at least conquerable even if the student does not always excel in it.

Jun 26, Teaching a 4 year old to Read

With 9 children to raise and homeschooling, it almost seems like I am an expert on teaching a child to read.

When I gave birth to my first child, I did not want to mess him up. I reviewed various reading curriculum.

After 21 years, I am still here reviewing new reading curriculum that comes out in the homeschooling market.

Don't I have by now a time-tested or children-tested reading curriculum in my hands?

The answer is: I still think the same way. I do not want to mess my youngest one just like I did not want to mess my oldest son.

So stay tuned. See how I messed them all up.

Jun 23, Raise SAT Scores, Read Classic Novels

The idea in most vocabulary studies involves studying a bunch of words that frequently appears in the SAT. They call this "Hot SAT words". It lists down the words and defines it. The problem with this method is it never goes to the student's long term memory. Memorizing them is not only difficult, it becomes old.

Rather than just taking the list of words from the dictionary, defining them, studying them, these SAT words from classic novels are learned by reading them "in context".

Jun 21, Why Everyone is Clueless about College at Home?

I learned about getting a college degree at home by joining email lists.

But, why is this seemingly unpopular yet?

Like any roads, there is a roadblock. It can either be that the roads are just being constructed or there are organizations deliberately making this inconspicuous to everyone.

The article <a href="http://www.study-at-home-with-joy.com/college-at-home.html">"Roadblocks to Getting Your College Degree at Home"</a> is not talking about why it is not possible to get your college degree at home. It identifies the reality of why college institutions are intentionally hiding this alternative route.

Jun 17, Why the Classics?

In excellent public schools, 4 classic books are read in one year. In average ones, probably a public school student encounters one book in the year.

When your student studies at home, they are in an advantageous position. Your student has all the time to sit on a comfortably couch and go to another world reading a classic book.

In the case of my family, I let the children read one classic book without stopping in each chapter.
Literature curriculum providers have long lists of reading comprehension questions after each chapter. For me, this exercise destroys the enjoyment of reading the classics. It is like reading a DVD movie and pausing each DVD chapter to analyze the chapter. Thus, I shun workbooks. In fact, I do not like correcting workbooks. It is one of the most boring experience in homeschooling.

I would rather read essays. I test my child's grasp of the subject through their essays.

I let them read and enjoy the book. If they gave me feedback that the book was boring, I know that their comprehension of the classic book may be superficial and shallow.

I weigh the situation: should I let them re-read or should I let them read the entire book first and then at a later time, come back to it when they are more mature.

If I know that the classic book may be above their heads, I google "SAT vocabulary for {put the title of the book} Then, I let them go over these words. I test them if they know the vocabulary. If they scored well, I can be confident they can understand the book.

The article <a href="http://www.study-at-home-with-joy.com/why-the-classics.html">"Why the Classics?"</a>
provides a glimpse of the many advantages of reading Classics books, which can stand as an excellent Grammar, Vocabulary, Spelling, Reading and Literature course in itself. You actually do not need to have a separate Grammar Course if you work with Classic Books. These Classic Books will teach your kids.

Find out how Classic Books is all you need for an excellent Reading and Literature Course.

Jun 10, Formal Ceili - Balancing your Teen's Study at Home Life

<strong> What about social life? What do you for socialization? </strong>

Ceili is a social gathering which involves playing Gaelic music and dancing.

It originated in Ireland. Traditionally, its facilitates courting among eligible single women and men until discos and clubs emerged in Ireland.

The musics and songs are lively and happy. The dancing steps can be learned easily.

The Formal Ceili is like the "prom" alternative of many homeschooling families in the town of Lincolnton and Hickory, North Carolina.

The young people in the area look forward to this event.

Stay tuned for pics soon.
